Description

Diorite, an igneous rock formed from intense heat below the Earth’s surface, has contrasting black and white mineral grains. Famously, the Code of Hammurabi, a black pillar inscribed with Babylonian Laws, was made of diorite. Diorite is an attractive gemstone; it looks like granite, yet diorite contains a small amount of quartz, whereas granite is largely quartz. Diorite is formed deep within the Earth’s crust from cooling magma that never made it to the surface.
