Description
Basalt is a dark fine-grained volcanic rock formed from the rapid cooling of lava at or near Earth’s surface.
Formation & Characteristics
- Origin: Basalt forms when molten lava cools quickly, usually at oceanic ridges, volcanic islands, or continental rift zones.
- Composition: Rich in iron and magnesium (mafic minerals), with plagioclase feldspar, pyroxene, and sometimes olivine.
- Texture: Fine-grained due to rapid cooling; can also appear vesicular (with holes) if gas bubbles were trapped.
- Color: Typically, dark gray to black, sometimes greenish or brownish.
- Hardness: Around 6 on the Mohs scale, making it durable.
